Rough cost by roof size
Contractors price roofing by the "square" (100 square feet of roof). As a planning guide, most cost guides show installed asphalt shingles at about $4 to $10 per square foot of roof, depending on the shingle and the job. That works out to roughly:
- 1,500 sq ft of roof: about $6,000 to $15,000
- 2,000 sq ft of roof: about $8,000 to $20,000
- 2,500 sq ft of roof: about $10,000 to $25,000
Roof size is not the same as house size. A two-story home with a small footprint can have a smaller roof than a one-story ranch that spreads out.
What changes the price
- Roof size and pitch. Bigger and steeper roofs take more material and more labor, and steep roofs need extra safety equipment.

3-tab vs. architectural shingles
Both are asphalt shingles. 3-tab shingles are thinner and flatter and cost less. Architectural shingles are thicker, layered, and handle Pennsylvania wind and freeze-thaw cycles better.
