Summer has brought some crazy weather for the Delaware Valley in 2018. There have been heat waves, torrential downpours, floods and some strong winded storms. With colder weather fast approaching, it’s important to check your home’s exterior and make sure there is not any home damage.
Carranza Roofing & Home Remodeling put together a quick checklist of things you can inspect to prepare for the fall and winter months.
Clean the Gutters
Ensure that your gutters and drains are ready for the storms that typically come in the fall and winter months. Any sort of blockage can bring on mold, rotting or can create standing water ponds resulting in roofing leaks. You definitely don’t want to deal with this problem when that water turns into ice!
Roofing Inspection
Heat, rain and wind can loosen shingles or completely rip them from the home. Inspect your home for any sort of roof damage and clear all debris from it. If your roof is damaged, it is important to fix it as soon as possible. Any sort of compromise in the roof can allow weather to enter into the home’s structure causing interior damage. This can become a lot more costly than simply replacing shingles.
Window Inspection
Windows that are older or not properly installed can increase your home’s heating and cooling costs. Inspect each window and ensure they are airtight. There should not be any wiggle room or air drafts coming thru. Inspect the caulking along the windows, if there are any cracks, you should reseal your windows.
Secure the Home’s Siding
Just like roofs, weather can loosen your siding from your home, exposing your home to the elements. Make sure there are not any holes or pieces of siding ripped from the home. Any exposure can leave your home open to weather damage. This is not good for the interior structure of the home and can be costly to repair.
Deck Maintenance
The summer heat can cause cracks and board splintering on your deck. If you didn’t apply a sealer for the summer, you might want to consider applying a coat for the fall.
